What is Joomla?
from:Joomla is a free, open source content system for publishing anything you may wish to on the Internet. It can also be used by businesses and / or institutions to publish things on their intranet. The Joomla system has some very good features; things like page caching, which helps to improve performance, web pages that can be easily printed, and search devices that work in blogs, polls, and general web sites. One of its more versatile features is that it can work in a cross-platform operating system.
Joomla is quite a new system, having only come into existence in September of 2005 and its latest version (1.5.1) only came out in February of 2008 so that’s the very latest in technology. The system is an offshoot of the Mambo system, created by the core developers of that very successful system.
Joomla is made up of several different parts, all of which have been made so as to be as modular as possible. Thus, integrations and extensions can be carried out with ease if you know what you’re doing. As an example of an extension (also known as a plug in), Joomla has what is called a “WikiBot,” which permits the creation of “Wikitags.” These are features that create a hyperlink to articles in Wikipedia – a really useful tool. That way, if you are writing an article on a given subject, with Joomla you can give the reader an easy way to find more information on the subject. If you want to get a full listing on the extensions for Joomla (of which there are over 2,700), just go to the Extensions Directory (the official directory of extensions) on the web site OpenSourceMatters maintains. Quite appropriately, it is called joomla.org.
Beyond the mere Joomla “plug ins” are “components.” These are more comprehensive extensions that will let you do such things as increase the features users can use, backup your website, and even translate the content of your web pages. One problem that many companies face is spelling errors in aspects of their website. A search engine, for all its usefulness, is merely a computer program. So, if you type in an incorrect word, the engine is likely to miss what you are looking for. Well, with Joomla, it can create URLs that are much easier for a search engine like Yahoo or Google to find.
Upgrades are yet another nice feature of Joomla. As of this date, there are many more extensions available for the earlier version (1.0) than for the 1.5, or even the current version. Yet, using the old extensions (at least in version 1.5) is made possible through the use of compatibility mode.
Then there is the issue of settings, parameters: how you want to configure your web pages. With Joomla, you can set those globally with great ease, yet also give your users the versatility to change any web page as they see fit or need.
So, no matter what you might want to publish on the Internet, Joomla can be a very powerful tool for you to use. Sure you can learn how to use all these powerful features for yourself, but many people make the full use of Joomla possibilities by putting their website in the hands of a professional website building company.
